A tip to “10 tips for a…”

You can witness a plague of 10 tips. Fast salvation for everyday problems, both those easy tasks as ironing to more complex like CEO habits and productivity tips. They, with all variety, have one thing in common – they don’t work.

Why not?

It happens for a lot of reasons, but let me highlight just a few of them.

Basically all they suggest is to change habits. And this is a very difficult task! From finding a good routine that you would like to incorporate into your everyday life to actually doing it leads a really long road. (you can read practical how-to in my last article).

What’s more, hopefully, those better lists of 10’s are based on real people and their real experience. What you can actually read is a list of created, shaped by time and experience, with a lot of experimenting and changing,  habits. And you need the same process to make it work for you. Don’t be discouraged! It’s a challenging fun to polish the process.

I recommend you read a book that will open your eyes on habit changing process: The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business. Use it to make significant changes for YOU.

You also need to remember: great ideas might not work for you. For example the most of productivity hacks will agree on this: Successful people don’t read their business emails for the first hour in the morning (or for the first hour at work). For me customers are all that matter, so it is supper important to respond fast and take care of them. On Passion For Business you can find more about checking email subject.

So don’t read at all?

No, use them as an inspiration! With time you will learn how to find valuable ones. Write them down, think about how can you use it, and how can they work for you in your environment. Gather a list of those, look through it from time to time and check if there is anything that you really want to try. All of my good habits that I use everyday were processed like that. I’ve also made some changes immediately, but none of them stayed with me for more than 3-4 weeks.

I find extremely useful information like that: How do creatives find the time to produce their opus?

If you want to know more about why it doesn’t work I recommend you the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People book. The author  affirms that only by working with your fundamental rules you can change yourself.
